BACKGROUND

VISION:  A dynamic innovative organization providing visionary leadership in national planning, while promoting gender equality and directing the course of sustainable development.
 
MISSION:  To drive the economic and social development of Trinidad &Tobago by implementing robust economic, social, spatial and gender policies using highly skilled personnel and incorporating dynamic and innovative methods throughout our Ministry.
 
RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE MINSTRY
The Ministry of Planning and the Economy was established in June 2010. The Ministry is responsible for the National Framework for Sustainable Development, Economic Planning and Monitoring, National Human Development, National Manpower Planning, Population, Gender Affairs, National Statistics, Town and Country Planning and Urban Development, and Technical Co-operation (Projects and Programmes). Under the Ministry’s portfolio, there are Statutory Boards and other bodies, namely, the Advisory Town Planning Panel, the National Population Council, the Council for Competitiveness and Innovation and the Economic Development Board.
To facilitate the conduct of its operations, the Ministry is organized into 6 functional divisions/units which target the specific areas of its portfolio, namely:
 
  • Town and Country Planning Division
  • Gender Affairs Division
  • Socio Economic Planning Division
  • Central Statistical Office
  • National Transformation Unit
  • Technical Cooperation Unit
 
Of specific mention is the inclusion of the Gender Affairs component as a strategy to integrate gender mainstreaming in national development planning.
 
Currently, the Ministry is actively involved in the pursuit of implementing a new economic strategy which incorporates the National Innovation System. This System was established in the context of confronting the challenge of economic diversification.
